Answer:

gradient = 9

Explanation:

The gradient of the tangent at x = a is the derivative
(dy)/(dx)

Differentiate using the power rule on each term

(d)/(dx) (a
x^(n) ) = na
x^(n-1) and
(d)/(dx) ( constant ) = 0

y = 2x² + 5x - 3

(dy)/(dx) = 2.2
x^(2-1) + 5
x^(1-1) - 0

= 4x + 5

(dy)/(dx) ( x = 1 ) = 4(1) + 5 = 4 + 5 = 9 ← gradient of tangent
