"Tommy!" Mom called out as she walked in the front door. " Tommy," she continued shouting, "I sure could use some help with these groceries. There was still no reply. Mom walked into kitchen to put the grocery bags down on the counter when she noticed shattered glass's from picture window all over the living roo. floor and a baseball not far from there. " I am going to kill you, Tommy!" Mom yelled to herself as she realized Tommy's shoes were gone.

The window was most likely broken by Tommy while he was playing baseball.
We can safely assume that this is what happened because if Tommy had broken a window, he probably wouldn’t want to be around when his mom got home and found out he broke it, that’s why his shoes are gone.
Tommy left because he didn’t want to suffer the consequences of breaking the window.
