Rome moved from just a city in Italy to being the core of the most powerful empire in the world around the 15th century BCE and the 1st century CE.

Military expansion pushed the economic growth, mostly by plunder and slavery from the war enemies; and one of the ways to extend the military and economic power was building a vast network of paved roads, and minting coins and standard units of silver and gold currency, such as the "denarius".
