In the third paragraph of this passage, Wiesel reflects on how people from the next century will view us; how will they judge us for being so indifferent to human sufferinf for the past hundred years.

He provides a long list of historical events in which many lives were taken, and people where harmed: the two world wars, the many civil wars, the assassination of good people such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King; he talks about the situation in Cambodia, Sarajevo, India and Rwanda, among many other countries.
