First, add 9 to both sides

-a/4 - 9 (+9) = 5 (+9)

-a/4 = 5 + 9

Next, multiply 4 to both sides

(-a/4)(4) = (14)(4)

-a = 56

Finally, isolate the a. Divide -1 from both sides

(-a)/-1 = (56)/-1

a = 56/-1

a = -56
