11/48 because you have to find the closest common factor, and that is 48. Then, you have to multiply 7 by 3, and you get 21. Then, multiply 16 and 1. Your word problem should be 21/48 + 16/48. Then, find your sum, which is 37/48, and subtract 48/48 by 37/48. You should get 11/48 as your answer.

Answer:

(3)/(8)

Explanation:

Let's tackle each statement at a time:

Jamal filled his gas tank of which he used
(7)/(16).

We need to express the unit (a gas tank) in terms of fractions so that we can substract
1-(7)/(16).

The denominator of the second term of our substraction is
16, so we can express the first term as
(16)/(16). Now that we have the same denominator in both terms, we can proceed to define
16 as a common denominator and rewrite the expression as:
(16-7)/(16), which gives us a result of
(9)/(16), which is what Jamal has left after visiting his grandfather. This expression cannot be simplified anymore.

Then, he used
(1)/(3) of the remaining
(9)/(16).

We express it as if he had
(2)/(3) of the remaining
(9)/(16).
:

(9)/(16) *(2)/(3)

We multiply the terms:

(18)/(48)

And simplify:

(9)/(24)

(3)/(8)

So, at the end, Jamal has
(3)/(8) of his tank left.
