The abolitionist movementĀ“s goal was to eliminate slavery. The first organization recognized as abolitionist in the United States was the "Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery". After the Revolution, northern states abolished slavery. This process started with the 1777 Constitution of Vermont.
