"The war is over, the Rebels are our countrymen again and the best sign of rejoicing after victory will be to abstain from all demonstrations in the field," was said after Lee surrendered at the Appomattox. Have a good day!

Grant gave Lee generous terms of surrender. The Confederate Army of Northern Viginia was fed (at that time they were starving because of the Confederacy's lack of supplies), allowed to keep their weapons, and sent home. Hope This Helps Answer You Question
