A taxi charges $4.00 for the first mile plus $1.25 for each additional mile.
On a fare of $16.50, how long was the ride?

Work backwards $16.50 a $4.00 is $12.50. That got you the first mile.
The $12.50 / $1.25 per mile is ten more miles

Total length of ride is ten plus one or eleven miles
