The most popular theory is that they were the people who brought wet rice cultivation to Japan from the Korean peninsula and Jiangnan near the Yangtze River Delta in ancient China. This is supported by archaeological researches and bones found in modern southeastern China.

Marked a break from the Neolithic culture of the Jomon and a shift toward a new culture that was probably influenced by immigrants from China and Korea.
