2j+6a = 24

5j+3a =21

multiply the 2nd equation by -2

-10j -6a = -42

add the 1st and the modified 2nd together

2j+6a = 24

-10j -6a = -42

---------------------

-8j = -18

divide by -8

j = 2.25

substitute into

2j+6a = 24

2(2.25) +6a =24

4.50 +6a =24

subtract 4.5 from each side

6a = 19.50

divide by 6

a = 3.25

Answer:

jelly beans are 2.25 per pound

almonds are 3.25 per pound
