The unit on the numerator, is miles and on the denominator is hours. This unit rate miles per hour then it is used.

V_(Average)=(\Delta s)/(\Delta t)\Rightarrow V_(Average)=(10-0)/(4-0)=2\:(1)/(2)\:or\: 2.5 mph\:
