Here the figure of speech is being utilized to elicit in the reader the feelings of joy that Judith experiences when she feels loved by this young man whom she had though impossible to reach. All the time she had felt that she was invisible to him, and she felt awkward with her poorly sawn toga, and therefore she believed that there was no way that she would ever attract his attention; yet there he was, surprising her with an embrace and a kiss.
