positive number times negative number is negative number "(+)(-) = (-)".

$1(1)/(2)\cdot\left(-1(1)/(4)\right)=-\left(1(1)/(2)\cdot1(1)/(4)\right)$

we change the mixed numbers to the improper fractions

$=-\left((1\cdot2+1)/(2)\cdot(1\cdot4+1)/(4)\right)=-\left((3)/(2)\cdot(5)/(4)\right)=-(3\cdot5)/(2\cdot4)=-(15)/(8)=-1(7)/(8)$
