One student group has decided to design a device where a toy car (10 grams) must apply a force to lift a 50-gram weight 2 inches in the air. What simple machine could the group use, and what mechanical advantage would they need to achieve their goal?

here the simple machine must be a pulley system that can be used here

When pulley system is used as simple machine the force applied by 10 g car is able to pull the 50 g weight by 2 inch in air

So here Mechanical advantage can be defined as

MA = (output)/(input)

here for output we will have

output = 50gram* 2 inch

similarly for input

input = 10 gram * 2inch

now the mechanical advantage will be given as

MA = (50 gram * 2 inch)/(10 gram * 2inch)

so here we have

MA = 5

so we have mechanical advantage of 5
