The 8th rule is: YOU MAY LIE
When Jonas first read this rule, he thought about whether other people have the same rule too, and I guess there’s no one except the Receiver of Memory who can lie.
The first time Jonas lied to his parents is the day when the Giver told him about love, Jonas went home and asked his parents whether they love him or not. His parents didn’t answer the question, his father said that Jonas need to make the question more specifically, he gave an example of ‘Do you enjoy me?’ And he answered ‘yes’ to this question. His mother gave a similar answer, also mentioned that Jonas need to ask a more specific question. After his mother’s explanation of the question, Jonas’s father asked him whether he understood them, and Jonas replied yes, which is the first lie he lied to his family, a complete lie.
