Answer: x = 28, y = 47

**Remember, these are just the values of the variables, not the angle measures. In order to find the angle measures, you need to plug these in. **

Explanation:

Finding x

40+5x=180

Subtract 40 from both sides --> 5x=140

Divide by 5 --> x=28

In order to find y, you need the angle to the left of the 40 degrees. (180-40) which is 140. Because the (3y-1) and 140 are across from one another, they are equal, so we set them equal, then get y alone.

3y-1 = 140

(add 1 to both sides) 3y = 141

(divide by 3) y = 47
