The way to properly lift an item is: A) Grip the item loosely with your fingers B) Squat down close to the item with your back arched, knees locked, and stomach muscles relaxed C) Stand at a distance from the item on your tiptoes with your heels touching. D) Lift and stand up slowly, keeping your back straight and letting your legs do the lifting.
