It has been theorized that mitochondria evolved from prokaryotic cells living symbiotically within a larger cell. Compare and contrast the structure of a mitochondrion with that of a prokaryotic cell.

Both the DNA in Mitochondria and prokaryotes is found in the cytoplasm (the matrix in the mitochondria)

The mitochondria have folds called cristæ

Prokaryotes have smaller genes called plasmids and they have flagella
