Radioactivity is a process in which the nucleus of an unstable atom transforms into a stable one releasing energy in the form of radiation. Whether an atom is radioactive or not depends on its stability. Stability, in the context of atomic nuclei. pertains to the balance of the internal forces among particles. There are a given number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus which, under normal conditions, coexist without losing energy. Such an atom is considered "Stable." However there are certain atoms that either have too many or too few neutrons or protons in their nuclei. This results in an imbalance between the forces holding them together, which leads to an excess of internal energy, this causes atoms to be radioactive.
