Answer:

3(x-1)-5(x-4)=8

We move all terms to the left:

3(x-1)-5(x-4)-(8)=0

We multiply parentheses

3x-5x-3+20-8=0

We add all the numbers together, and all the variables

-2x+9=0

We move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right

-2x=-9

x=-9/-2

x=4+1/2

Explanation:

3(x-1) -5(x-4) = 8

3x-3 -5x+20 = 8

3x -5x -3 +20 = 8

-2x + 17 = 8

17 -8 = 2x

9 = 2x

2x = 9

x = 9/2
