Americans wanted to move west because Britain owned it now and some had purchased it already, but the British said nobody could live there. some ignored this and lived on the frontier

The conflict on the American Frontier increased tensions between the United States and Britain, especially during George Washington´s presidency, as increasing numbers of settlers went West, increasing the tensions with the Native Americans. This increased tensions with Britain, which presence in the Northwest Territory was still very important.
