Drawing pictures of Native Americans showed their way of living, believes, how their society was formed and the things that were important to them. The English colonists used these drawings to understand Native Americans society and views as a way to manipulate them to search for gold and give them what they wanted. To understand their oponent was a tactic to obtain what they were searching for.

Drawing pictures of Native Americans would give the English a glimpse into what the new world was like and what they could expect once they colonised and arrived. An example of this is a sketch by John White in the late 1500's which show a fisherman catching all kinds of fish as well as beautiful surroundings. This was used to show the English that America had everything they ever wanted (open spaces and beautiful countrysides).
