What is alliteration and how often does the original Beowulf poet use alliterion

Alliteration is the stylistic device which uses repeated sound or letter at the beginning of words in a sentence.

In Beowolf almost every line uses the device. Examples of alliteration in Beowolf are:

"Doing black deeds in the dead of night"

"Then as dawn brightened and the day broke"
