How did Ming China's relationship with japan differ from its relationship with korea?

Korea was required to provide regular tributes to China, while Japan was required to provide tributes less frequently.

The Ming´s dynasty took control of Korea as a vassal state upon the fall of the Mongols. Different to this was the relationship with Japan, which , during the Ming´s dynasty sent many trade and diplomatic missions to China.
