Even though Mesopotamia was a fertile land, farming wasn’t always easy because of the variation in levels of the rivers Tigris and Euphrate so, in order to prevent floods from destroying their crops and wash away their homes, Mesopotamians built the riverbanks of the Tigris and Euphrate which repressed floods by controlling the level of water and maintaining the rivers waterway.

Hope this can help!
