During the French and Indian War in America, British troops who had helped the colonists to fight the war, were now left stationed in the colonies for protection, and demanded money to pay for the troops. The British Parliament taxed American colonies to obtain money for these payments. Also in 1764 the British began imposing new laws and taxes such as the Sugar Act and the Quartering Act. The colonists, unhappy by these raises in taxes, came with the motto "No Taxation Without Representation".
