Let "a number" = x

2x + 1 = 11

Isolate the x. Note the equal sign, what you do to one side, you do to the other. Do the opposite of PEMDAS.

First, subtract 1 from both sides

2x + 1 (-1) = 11 (-1)

2x = 11 - 1

2x = 10

Next, divide 2 from both sides

(2x)/2 = (10)/2

x = 10/2

x = 5

5 is your answer
