Step 1: Simplify both sides of the equation.
( 3 x − 1 )( 2 ) = 5
( 3 x )( 2 ) + (− 1 )( 2 ) = 5 (Distribute)
6 x + − 2 = 5
6 x − 2 = 5

Step 2: Add 2 to both sides.
6 x − 2 + 2 = 5 + 2
6 x = 7

Step 3: Divide both sides by 6.
6 x
6 = 7
6
x = 7
