According to this screenshot of February 17,1898 from the New York Journal the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana,Cuba while sent there in order to protect the interest of USA citizens in Cuba was a deliberate move by attackers/enemies of the state and the journal offers a $50.000 reward for information on these perpetrators that led to the death of 258 sailors, that Assistant Secretary Roosevelt is convinced was not an accident.
