To substitute into the second equation, you need to get y by itself on one side,

-y = -22x - 23

You would now divide both sides by -1,

y = 22x + 23

Now you can plug in this equation for y,

11x + 12(22x+23) = 1

Now apply 12 to both 22x and 23,

11x + 264x + 276 = 1

Now combine the x's since they are like terms,

275x +276 = 1

Now subtract 276 from both sides to get 273x by itself,

275x = -275

Now divide -275 by 275,

x=
(-275)/(275)

This gives you -1
