Question 53
Using your understanding of diction and tone, select the best meaning for Romeo's lines in the following section from Romeo and Juliet:

TYBALT
Romeo, the hate I bear thee can afford
No better term than this,—thou art a villain.

ROMEO
Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee
Doth much excuse the appertaining rage
To such a greeting: villain am I none;
Therefore farewell; I see thou know'st me not.

TYBALT
Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries
That thou hast done me; therefore turn and draw.

ROMEO
I do protest, I never injured thee,
But love thee better than thou canst devise,
Till thou shalt know the reason of my love:
And so, good Capulet,—which name I tender
As dearly as my own,—be satisfied.

A) Romeo's diction indicates that he is angry and hoping to start a fight.
B) Romeo's diction indicates that he is trying to stay calm and be polite.
C) Romeo's diction indicates that he is afraid of talking to Tybalt in public.
D) Romeo's diction indicates that he thinks he is better than the Capulets.

Question 54

President George W. Bush’s speech to the troops on the USS Abraham Lincoln
Our mission continues. Al-Qaida is wounded, not destroyed. The scattered cells of the terrorist network still operate in many nations, and we know from daily intelligence that they continue to plot against free people. The proliferation of deadly weapons remains a serious danger. The enemies of freedom are not idle, and neither are we. Our government has taken unprecedented measures to defend the homeland — and we will continue to hunt down the enemy before he can strike.

The war on terror is not over, yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide. No act of the terrorists will change our purpose, or weaken our resolve, or alter their fate. Their cause is lost. Free nations will press on to victory.

Other nations in history have fought in foreign lands and remained to occupy and exploit. Americans, following a battle, want nothing more than to return home. And that is your direction tonight. After service in the Afghan and Iraqi theaters of war — after 100,000 miles, on the longest carrier deployment in recent history — you are homeward bound. Some of you will see new family members for the first time — 150 babies were born while their fathers were on the Lincoln. Your families are proud of you, and your nation will welcome you.

How is the third paragraph different from the first two?

It no longer sounds authoritative or informed about the situation.
It broadens its view to consider the service people around the world.
It gets more specific by talking about the service people on the USS Lincoln.
It comes across as unfeeling and insensitive to the people who have suffered.

Answer:

B) Romeo's diction indicates that he is trying to stay calm and be polite.

Romeo said that Tybalt does not know him enough to realise he's not a villain.

Question 2. It gets more specific by talking about the service people on the USS Lincoln

The first 2 paragraphs talked about the terrorist group, Al-Qaeda and the havoc they had wrecked. Also, the soldiers were informed that the war is not over, however no act of terrorism will change their purpose.

The speaker then go on to commend the soldiers. They are homebound where their families are waiting for them and the nation is proud of them.
