An archetype is a guide to follow, it is a prototype image to duplicate and reproduce; ideally, a pattern that serves as a basis for shaping or perfecting something. Within the cinema, archetypes can be found in film genres and in the tracing of characters as repeated elements that create standards, formulas or patterns.

An archetype is, for example, that character who works as a hero's mentor: for example, Dumbledore for Harry Potter or Obi Wan Kenobi for Luke Skywalker.

The film or the story needs those archetypal instruments to work, because they allow us to capture the values that we want to express and cohesion the characters.

The archetype of a life mentor is presented in both Harry Potter and Star Wars. In the former it is Dumbledore, whereas the in the latter it is Yoda. Dumbledore seems to be the one who teaches and shows the proper path to follow in life. It can be said that owing to the wisdom he posses, he is a role model for his students. Similarly, in Star Wars Yoda is the person who is admired by his students. He passes the knowledge how to use the force to Luke and his father. Not only do both of the characters teach their students valuable lessons, but also they make sure their pupils are ready to face the difficulties that are awaiting them in their life journey.
