I dont quite understand the problem but this is one way to solve it using completing the square:-

2x^2 + 8x - 12 = 0

2(x^2 + 4x) - 12 = 0

2((x + 2)^2 - 4) = 12

2(x + 2)^2 - 8 + 8 = 12 + 8

2(x + 2)^2 = 20
