“I have soccer practice first,” Evan thought, “then my violin lesson.”

If the direct speech is placed at the beginning of the sentence, you have to put a comma before the final quotation mark. You don’t have to use a full stop here in this place. Example: “I have soccer practice first,”

Besides, you have to use a comma after the reporting clause. Example: Evan thought,

The terminal full stop (.) is used before the closing speech mark. Example: “then my violin lesson.”

It is important to state that quotation starts with a capital letter, except when it is interrupted by a reporting clause; in this case the first letter of the continuation (or second quotation) is not capitalised: “I have soccer practice first,” Evan thought, then my violin lesson.”
