The state of Louisiana has suffered a severe process of coastal erosion, having lost 3058 square kilometers between 1932 and 2000 and is expected to lose another 2816 square kilometers by 1964, according to data from the US Geological Survey.

In addition to social and environmental impact, this process is a catastrophe for Louisiana's economy as it threatens the structural mesh of its energy industry, located on the coast, valued at $ 100 billion according to Bloomberg (2016).

In this way, the coastal restoration program will protect the state's motor industry and its entire production chain, as well as the value that would be lost through flooding in homes and businesses and the deaths of citizens.

Coastal land loss has significantly impacted the economy in Louisiana, in addition to taking a toll to the environment. Therefore, the state of Louisiana created a 50-year Coastal Master Plan.

This plan is meant to provide greater environmental and flood protection security to Louisiana communities, as well as new momentum to the economy. The benefits will be allocated to the areas of energy, chemicals, international trade, fisheries and national defence.

The program will support as many as 10,500 jobs a year. On top of jobs, coastal spending will provide up to $620 million in wages and $1.5 billion in annual output.
