Immigration is changing the role of religion in America because the immigrants settling in the 1800s were mainly from Europe, places with similar religions to those in the colonies. In recent years there have been immigrants from all over the world coming from America bringing various religions, increasing religious diversity. After the 9/11 attacks there has been a significant increase in Muslim intolerance throughout America.

Immigration is affecting religion in America in several different ways. For example, while Evangelical Christianity has been the most common religion in America for centuries, other denominations, such as Catholicism and Islam continue to grow. The political aspects of immigration, moreover, are becoming entangled with religion, so that many evangelical churches are embracing extreme-right anti-immigration attitudes. Also, as the population of the country continues to diversify, the population within individual churches is becoming more diverse as well, with new immigrants joining congregations.
