Miller wrote the play as an allegory for McCarthyism, when the United States government persecuted people accused of being communists, on the heels of World War II, which ended in 1945. At this time the United States was becoming increasingly concerned about the rising power of the Soviet Union. They were worried about the Soviet Union's communist ways would infiltrate the United States which led to a significant amount of paranoia within the American government.
