"a letter to the king attempting to restore peace between the colonies and England " is the right answer. Here's some evidence, and when I checked it, it is right.

This is an excerpt from K12 Lesson 7.04, 8th Grade History/Social Studies, page 2/4 How the Colonists Respond. Please read it!

"Though they prepared for war, the colonists hoped for peace. Still considering themselves English citizens seeking to protect their rights within the empire, the colonists attempted to restore relations with England one last time. The Second Continental Congress sent a letter called the Olive Branch Petition to King George III in July of 1775. The letter declared colonial loyalty to the king and asked him to end the harsh British policies so peace could return between England and the colonies.

The king, however, rejected the petition and issued a new declaration shown on this page. Declaring the colonies in rebellion, he called for stiffer measures against them. He announced a British blockade to keep colonial ships from leaving their American ports. He further declared that he would send paid German troops, called Hessians, to join the British soldiers in America. George wanted to force the Americans to submit to his will. There would be war."
