The Industrial Revolution began in the textile industries . Newly invented machines such as the spinning jenny helped increase the rate at which yarn and thread were made. Industrialization increased the demand for cotton as well. This led to Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin.

He invented the cotton gin, a machine that greatly accelerated the speed of the process of removing seeds from cotton fibers. This helped to turn this industry into America's leading export. Due to problems with the patent, the cotton gin did not give Whitney too much profit. Worse still, the invention of the machine did not do much in the efforts to abolish slavery, as slaves continued to be employed in its use.
