The establishment of Carthage by the Phoenicians go back to the legend of Queen Dido, regarded as the founder of the city of Carthage, which would later be the capital of the empire by the same name. According to the legend, Dido bought from a local tribe the land that could be covered by the hide of an ox; she cutted the skin in strips and thus covered a great deal more of terrain.
