The hands of the speaker's father serve as a symbol in "My Father's Song" by representing the strength that the speaker must develop if he is to survive and grow.
The speaker's father uses his hands wisely to handle an unexpected event such as the apparition of mice that happened because of their corn sowing. Instead of killing the mice, the father kept them alive moving them to a safer place. With those actions, the father teached to his son the importance of valuing the life and to develop strength to make the wiser desitions and to survive in life.
