On December 20, 1989, the invasion, called Operation Fair Cause, overthrew the government of Manuel Noriega in Panama. The consequences were of a political, economic and mainly humanitarian nature.

The conflict has claimed many lives of Panamanian civilians. The dictator Noriega was arrested and convicted in the United States. Democratic elections were called, being elected Guillermo Endara, posed in 1990 putting an end to the dictatorship that began in 1968.

The united States were interested in getting control of the Panama isthmus from the beginning of the 20th century. The USA helped Panama obtaining its independence from Colombia, which was repaid by Panama granting the United States soverignity over the isthmus and the bioceanic canal to be built. Except a few exceptions, sucha as the invasion of Panama in Noriega times, the relationship between both countries are very good; f.i. many american citizens reside in Panama
