What sparked the development of the Second Industrial revolution?

The Second Industrial Revolution was based in many technological developments but what really sparked it was the widespread use of such technologies by a great number of people; this widespread use was based in turn on two main developments: railroads and telegraph; a little bit later, the addition of telephone and the wide use of oil and all its sub products.
