Yes, because a modest career in local business, Morrill became active in Whig politics in the 1850s. Struck by the internal dissension within the party, he devoted himself afterward to preserving harmony within the Republican Party, which he helped found in Vermont (1855). He then went on to serve 12 years in the House of Representatives (1855–67) and 31 years in the Senate (1867–98).
