What is twice a number is 60 more than five times the number

Let's use the variable *x* to represent this number in our equation:

2x - 60 = 5x

We must first isolate the variable, an easy way of doing that would be to subtract "2x" from each side of the equation:

-60 = 3x

Now we must get rid of that 3 next to the "x" by dividing both sides by 3:

-20 = x

And there we have it! Our mystery number is equal to -20. An alternative equation you could've written at the very start was "2x = 5x + 60" but we would of still ended up with the same answer. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I'll be happy to work with you!
