How do you solve for x in the equation 4x-2(x-2)=-9+5x-8

first distribute the 2 into (x-2) so that the new equation is 4x-2x+4=9+5x-8 Afterwards add up common factors and get the x to one side 2x+4=1+5x (subtract 2x from both sides) 4=1+3x (subtract 1 from both sides) 3=3x (divide by 3 on both sides) 1=x
