The transfer of power betwen James II (catholic) and his daughter Mary III ( protestant) and her husband William III (also protestant) was not peaceful at all.

In fact, it was known as the Glorious Revolution of 1688. It all came to a question of religion. The political parties did not accept James II Catholicism and with the birth of his son James, he affected the line of sucession, by displacing his heir Mary, protestant and the wife of William, the Duke of Orange. Therefore, some members of Parliament started to talk to William to come to England.

He got political and economical support and crossed the English channel, causing after some battles the collapse of the reign. James and his wife fled England and went to France.
