Ghana was a kingdom in Africa that lasted from the 6th to the 13th century CE, located south of the Sahara desert and northwest of the Niger River in modern day Mauritania and Mali.

Answer:

The Kingdom of Ghana, which lasted from 750 to 1068, was located in what is now southeastern Mauritania and the western part of Mali, south of the Sahara, in the middle valley of the Senegal River. It was known by the name of Wagadu by its own Soninke citizens, but the Europeans and Arabs called it the Ghanaian Empire for the title of its king, Ghana, which meant "warrior king". Wagadu meant land of flocks.
