The displacement method to determine the volume of a solid is bet to measure a solid when it is insoluble in liquid and has an irregular shape.

The method consists in filling a recipient with a known amount of water, lets say a measuring cup with one cup of water. Then, put the solid inside it, totally covered by the water; measure the new volume at the water line, subtract the starting volume from this new volume, and you will have the volume of the solid.
